Early Intervention Services

Kindergarten—First Grade

Program Overview

The Tuckahoe Union Free School District Early Intervention Program provides instruction and support to students who require additional pre-reading and early reading  support in Kindergarten and First Grade.  The program is designed to support reading, writing, listening and speaking through an assortment of learning activities.  The following competencies are emphasized: phonological awareness, print awareness ( Concepts about Print), alphabetic principle, reading strategies, structural analysis (decoding), vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.


Diagnostic Screening of Pupils
 

Students are identified in Kindergarten and First Grade for Early Intervention Services based on various formal and informal assessments:

  • Kindergarten: Kindergarten Screening, Early Literacy Profile, and Teacher Observation and Recommendation
  • First Grade: Gates MacGinitie Reading Test,  Marie Clay Observation Survey, and Diagnostic Reading Assessment (DRA)


Services Provided

The students selected for the Early Intervention Program will receive lessons with the specialist based on their needs. Some students will meet with the specialist individually on a daily basis while others will meet two to three times a week with a small group of his her peers.  Lessons are specially tailored toward specific skills and strategies that the student needs to work on.


Program Exit

In order to exit the Early Intervention Program students will demonstrate grade level reading achievement on the formal and informal assessments administered.
